Psyche Counseling A work injury can be one of the most stressful events in your life. In most cases psychological counseling does wonders to help ease the confusion, frustration and depression that injured workers like yourself so often feel as a result of a work injury. However, this help is rarely provided. The reasons are simple. First, insurance companies do not want to pay for it. Secondly, traditional doctors often ignore the emotional aspect of a work injury. Insurance companies would rather spend thousands of dollars fighting a claim for emotional stress than provide counseling. This attitude is unfortunate and in the long run far more costly. There clearly seems to be a relationship between mental attitude and the healing process. I have spent too many years watching injured workers fall into a vicious cycle. Usually when people are first injured, they are optimistic that they will heal quickly and return to work. However, when this does not occur people become less hopeful and begin to dwell on the negatives. Numerous studies have shown that the longer a person is out of work, the less likely it is they will return to the job at which they were injured. I believe this is due to a vicious cycle of pain and depression. I see this in so many of my cases. Over time, my clients become less and less active and independent. Many become incapable of handling the simplest decisions in life. It does not have to be this way! Even if your physical limitations are not getting better, you can help yourself by changing your mental attitude. However, most people can not do this on their own. They need psychological help to break the cycle of depression. Professional mental health counseling can help you to relearn to provide yourself with a sense of self confidence and self-worth the benefits of which you will be felt long after your doctors have released you from their care. In order to get help, you first need to make your treating doctor aware of your emotional problems. I know how difficult it can be to recognize that youre having emotional problems and to tell your doctor. However, you must take this first step in order to get help. Next, you need to request that your doctor refer you to a therapist. If your doctor is unwilling, you really need to think about whether your doctor is most interested in you or the insurance company. Please see the Medical Treatment section of this web site regarding problems with doctors and your rights. Unfortunately, most insurance companies are unwilling to authorize and pay for psychological care. Thus, you can only get help if you find a therapist that is willing to treat you on a lien. Often they will be unwilling to provide treatment on a lien unless you have an attorney. Most insurance companies will also setup an appointment for you to be examined by one of their stable of doctors. The only purpose of these examinations is for the insurance company doctor to write a report denying your need for psychological treatment as a result of your work injury. Do not let this prevent you from getting the help you need. In the vast majority of cases, the insurance company will send you a letter denying the psychological aspect of your claim. All of these actions have been taken by the insurance company in a concerted effort to convince you not to get the help you need. Dont give in. I highly recommend that you speak with an attorney about your rights. |
